Origin
The Calathea makoyana, also known as the peacock plant, is originally from the tropical rainforest of Brazil. The plant belongs to the Marantaceae family and usually grows in the shady undergrowth in nature. This species has become a popular houseplant, largely thanks to its striking appearance and unusual pattern of growth.

Characteristics
The Calathea makoyana has large, oval leaves that grow on long stems. These leaves are green on the top side and reddish-purple on the underside. The plant is especially known for its brightly coloured and striking patterns on its leaves, which remind one of the feathers of a peacock. The flowers of the Calathea makoyana are white with purple accents and grow directly from the plant's stalks, usually in late spring or early summer.

Care
An easy going houseplant, Calathea thrive in warm, humid environments with indirect sunlight. Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. During the growing seasons of Spring and Summer, fertilise the plant monthly to support healthy growth. Given its high preference for humidity, regularly misting the plant is recommended to maintain optimal conditions.
