The name 'Fatsia' is derived from the Japanese word 'hatsuya', which means 'eight fingers', referring to the number of points on the leaves.

Characteristics
The Fatsia japonica is an evergreen, bushy shrub that is often cultivated for its decorative, large, hand-shaped leaves. The leaves are richly shiny, dark green and can become up to 45 cm wide. In the autumn, the Fatsia japonica produces small, star-shaped, white flowers that grow in large clusters. These flowers further develop into small black fruits.
