Origin
The Fatsia japonica, also known as the Japanese aralia or paper plant, originates from Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Here, the plant often grows in mountainous areas and in wooded environments. The name 'Fatsia' is derived from the Japanese word 'hatsuya', which means 'eight fingers', referring to the number of points on the leaves.

Characteristics
The Fatsia japonica is an evergreen, bushy shrub that is often cultivated for its decorative, large, hand-shaped leaves. The leaves are richly shiny, dark green and can become up to 45 cm wide. In the autumn, the Fatsia japonica produces small, star-shaped, white flowers that grow in large clusters. These flowers further develop into small black fruits.

Care
The Fatsia japonica is an easy-care plant that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings. The plant prefers a light to shady location and needs moderate watering without the roots standing in water. To maintain the leaf density, it's better to prevent the leaves from drying out. Pruning in spring helps to keep the plant compact and neat.
