Planting System
This plant display is made up with a pot plant, filled with Vulkastrat and is equipped with a waterlevel indicator. Vulkastrat absorbs more water than regular soil and releases it gradually to the roots. Vulkastrat cannot shrink shut due to its coarse structure, which keeps the soil more airy and allows the roots to absorb enough oxygen.

Origin
The Alocasia cucullata, also known as the Chinese taro, is originally from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. This plant can be found especially in countries like Malaysia, the Philippines, and parts of Australia.

Characteristics
The Alocasia cucullata is an evergreen, perennial plant with a striking, heart-shaped leaf shape. The leaves have a glossy, dark green colour and can reach up to 20 centimetres in width. The plant has characteristic, dense leaf rosettes that can grow up to 60 centimetres in height. This plant rarely blooms, but when it does, it produces smaller, white flowers on a slender, green stem.

Care
Alocasia typically demand minimal care. The plant prefers a warm and humid environment, similar to its tropical origin. Indirect sunlight is most suitable for the Alocasia, to prevent burning of the leaves. It is important to keep the soil moist, although overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot. Regular misting with water can help maintain humidity. The plant can be fed with a general houseplant fertiliser during the growing seasons.
